I was quite surprised that I got 8 out of 10 once again \u2013 more than I would have expected!\u00a0 Gutted that Slovenia didn\u2019t get through but relieved that Sweden did.<\/p>\n<p>The only songs that have not yet had special mention on the blog this year are the songs from the \u201cBig 5\u201d (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) and the host country, Azerbaijan. The Big 5 are the main contributors to the European Broadcasting Union, and as such they get direct passage to the final \u2013 media imperialism lives!<\/p>\n<p>Many fans and commentators see the efforts of the Big 5 this year as a collective raising of their game \u2013 occasionally they are accused of not investing much effort in terms of quality control in the songs that they send to compete. I guess if we reflect on the merits of the UK entries over recent years they might have a point!<\/p>\n<p>Here then are the entries from the Big 5 and host country Azerbaijan:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azerbaijan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sabina Babayeva - When The Music Dies (Azerbaijan) 2012 Eurovision Song Contest Official Preview\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-8ejpLyXSuY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was a grower for me, but I really like it now.\u00a0 Since they entered for the first time in 2008 Azerbaijan has had an excellent success rate, sending well-crafted songs that connect well with the pan-European television audience.\u00a0 Part of their success is collaborating with international songwriters.\u00a0 Last year it was really the Swedes that won it for Azerbaijan \u2013 the song was written by Swedish guys, and the backing singer were Swedish too!<\/p>\n<p>The song looks like it\u2019s struggling in the betting odds, but with the home town advantage tomorrow night I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll do well \u2013 perhaps more so with the juries (comprising five music industry professionals) than the televoters (that\u2019s you and me).<\/p>\n<p><strong>France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"France - &quot;Echo (You and I)&quot; by Anggun - Eurovision Song Contest 2012 - BBC One\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mUFYjJV0lyY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was one of the first songs that I heard this year \u2013 and it was an immediate hit for me.\u00a0 I should advise you to listen to the song again without watching the video \u2013 it\u2019s as mad as a box of frogs, isn\u2019t it!\u00a0 Apparently when we see Angun perform on Saturday night she will be surrounded by bare-chested men.\u00a0 Talk about knowing your audience!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Germany - &quot;Standing Still&quot; by Roman LobSong - Eurovision Song Contest 2012 - BBC One\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VZ6wazGG6Dk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Germany have really got their groove back it terms of song quality and success in the last few years. Lena\u2019s \u201cSatellite\u201d was a great winner in 2010, and last year she returned to defend her crown with what I still think was one of the most brilliant songs in recent years (\u201cTaken By A Stranger\u201d).\u00a0 This year a change of tempo to a more relaxed song from pretty boy Roman.\u00a0 This should give Germany another top ten finish \u2013 that\u2019s if I\u2019m not to be the kiss of death to at least one song this year\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Italy - &quot;L&#039;Amore \u00c8 Femmina&quot; by Nina Zilli - Eurovision Song Contest 2012 - BBC\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vQCTR9LOKqs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After a surprise second place last year Italy return with any Amy Winehouse-esque track.\u00a0 I can see why it\u2019s third favourite \u2013 and another song that will do well with both the international juries and the televoters.\u00a0 Top 10 for sure, probably Top 5, and it wouldn\u2019t surprise me if it did win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spain: &quot;Qu\u00e9date Conmigo (Stay With Me)&quot; - Eurovision Song Contest 2012 - BBC One\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VrNlKD02lhI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lots of fans were giddy with excitement about this song when it was first selected.\u00a0 I just couldn\u2019t get it.\u00a0 However, a couple of months on, and after a fair few listens I kinda see what the fuss is about. Great vocal, and it builds to a suitable crescendo towards the end.\u00a0 Coming late in the draw might also be useful for this song.\u00a0 Something that the next song need not worry about\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>United Kingdom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (United Kingdom) 2012 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pFNv9pjqZkk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 starting from first position in the draw is a bit of a blow. It is not the most coveted of positions, although second position is seen as the kiss of death \u2013 no song has ever won from there.\u00a0 That said, the UK have actually won from first position!\u00a0 Yes, fact fans and history buffs (remember this as a potential pub quiz question) Brotherhood of Man won for the UK back in 1976 with this classic\u2026<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eurovision 1976 - United Kingdom\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fhq_Q1Ut8SQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other first place winners include \u201cDing Dinge Dong\u201d for The Netherlands in 1975 and \u201cDiggi-Loo Diggie-Lay \u201cfor Sweden in 1984.\u00a0 Perhaps we should have called our entry \u201cLove Will Set You Diggi-Loo\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I really like the song.\u00a0 From the first listen in the office with Deb and Jules, when we all had a \u201ceuro-tingle\u201d, to today I think it\u2019s a beautiful song \u2013 well composed and arranged \u2013 simplicity in a sea of Eurovision giddiness can\u2019t be a bad thing. Let\u2019s hope that the juries love it and that the televoters don\u2019t forget it in the mix by the end of the night.\u00a0 It will be a good result for us to finish on the left side of the scoreboard, a great result to finish Top 10.
