Conference Outline
Housing has dominated the public debate. The past five years have seen a rapid wave of reforms and further reforms are planned, with a proposed ‘better deal for renters’ and a new green paper on Social Renting. Given the magnitude of the planned changes, there is a significant need for evidence-based policymaking.
This inaugural conference of the Evidence Network for Renting (EN4R) will bring together academics, policymakers and professionals from across the UK and provide a forum for sharing research and knowledge. The conference will also provide a platform for the development of a common research and policy agenda for renting in 2020 and beyond.
The conference, funded by the Housing Studies Association and the Institute for Social Responsibility, aims to unpick a number of the key challenges and policy issues facing renting. There are significant issues to emerging that need to be addressed, such as the blurring of responsibilities between social and private landlords, fire safety standards in the aftermath of Grenfell, regulatory reform and a ‘better’ deal for renters, as well as right to buy and tenant participation for Housing Associations. We welcome papers, from academics, policymakers and professionals, addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:
- A ‘better’ deal for renters, regulatory reform, and the end of ‘no fault’ evictions;
- Safety, standards, practice and enforcement;
- Housing-related welfare reforms and housing policy;
- Renting, home and communities;
- New forms of renting, short-term lets and property guardianships;
- Public health and home;

Deadline
Please submit an abstract of up to 250 words by Friday 10th April 2020 at 1pm by using the following online form.
We encourage contributions from academics at any stage in their career, and, those in policy and practice roles.
All abstracts will be reviewed by our review panel. Following the conference, all authors of papers presented at the conference will be asked to provide a summary article up to 4,000 words to be included in our inaugural EN4R report. This report will also include the policy and research recommendations developed by the attendees of the conference.
Bursaries
To support Early Career Researchers, two papers slots have been reserved for ECRS and the two best papers by ECRs (judged by our review panel) will be supported by a travel bursary up to £50 each. Please indicate in your submission if you are an Early Career Researcher (ECR).
