Visit to Liverpool

Myself and a few other 3rd year Biology students joined the 1st year students on a trip to Liverpool yesterday. This is a social event arranged by the department during freshers week each year and it’s an opportunity for the 1st years to get to know each other a bit better; and also a chance to visit the historic city of Liverpool (if they haven’t already!).

The day began with a trip on the ferry across the Mersey followed by lunch in Red Hot in Liverpool One. The students then have the rest of the afternoon to explore the city, before heading back to Edge Hill.

I really enjoyed the day and it was nice getting to know some of the first year students!

Open day.. Sat 13th October

To all prospective students…. There is an open day at Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk campus on Saturday 13th October 10am- 3pm, with 40 minute guided campus tours departing at 20 minute intervals throughout the day!

This is a great opportunity to find out more about your chosen course and to get a real experience of what it’s like to be a student at Edge Hill. You’ll also get a chance to meet the department staff and students and ask any questions you may have.

New academic year

The summer is nearly over and the start of my final year is nearly here. It’s really surprising how fast the summer has gone; and my first two years at university!

I’m looking forward to starting year 3, and i’m really interested to find out what I will be learning on my new modules. I am well on my way with my Dissertation now; the other modules I have chosen are Tropical Ecology, Ecological Genetics, Current Issues in Biology and Epidemiology… this is my last chance now to make the most out of my time at Edge Hill 🙂

Dissertation part 5

Following on from my last post about my dissertation; things havn’t gone as smoothly as I’d hoped!

It turned out that the samples of Small leaved Lime that I was able to collect, was enough to carry out my dissertation question so I have had to start my fieldwork again using a different species. I am now looking at self incompatibility in Sticky groundsel instead and have started collecting my samples again!

I am extremely relieved that I started my dissertation when I did because fortunately, I still have time to do what I need to do…. my advice to anyone doing a dissertation is to start right away! There are many things that don’t go to plan when carrying out research and it’s much better to allow time for problems.

Open day success

Another open day has been and gone!

The weather was great and the campus was busy with people all day with plenty going on. Thank you to everyone that came, I hope you enjoyed the day and got what you wanted out of it.

I presented a student experience talk to a number of different people and chatted about various things… It’s really nice to be able help and offer people advice on the kinds of things that I was concerned about when I was considering going to University!

I hope that attending our open day has made lots of people choose Edge Hill as their first choice 🙂

Our next open day is Saturday 13th October 2012, 10.00am – 3.00pm…. Visit our website to book your place now!

Dissertation part 4

Following on from visiting the sampling sites for my Dissertation, I have now completed the first part of my research. I have visited each location and applied various treatments on the small leaved lime flowers which I now plan to take back to the lab to carry out some fluorescence microscopy techniques.

The treatments involved bagging the flowers before they open, and once open, carrying out various crosses with other trees, and self fertilisation.This should allow me to determine if this species is self incompatible. Here a few pictures I took of the flowers after I had applied the treatments;

Open event Sat 18th!

To all prospective students…. There is an open day at Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk campus on Saturday 18th August 10am- 3pm, with 40 minute guided campus tours departing at 20 minute intervals throughout the day!

This is a great opportunity to find out more about your chosen course and to get a real experience of what it’s like to be a student at Edge Hill. You’ll also get a chance to meet the department staff and students and ask any questions you may have.

1 year left!

I feel like i’m well on my way into my last year at Uni now 🙂

We got our end of year results the other week and I acheived my target of a 2:1 which I was really pleased with and I feel like i’ve made a good start on my dissertation project too!

I was really nice seeing all the graduation ceremonies taking place at Edge Hill last week… it motivated me to try and really work hard and make the most of my final year here. I am really looking forward to graduating, and I hope I acheive the grade I want!

Cancer research sponsorship pack

I was very excited to receive my Cancer Research sponsorship through the post the other day… I’m now one step further to raising money for a very good cause!

The pack included a really useful training and fundraising guide, sponsorship forms, a link so I can set up my own sponsorship webpage and my very own Cancer Research vest, personalised with my name.

I am now starting to increase my mileage in my marathon training and I look forward to getting some sponsorships started!
