{"id":40,"date":"2015-02-11T16:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T16:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/election\/?p=40"},"modified":"2015-05-12T11:46:41","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T10:46:41","slug":"broken-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/comment\/2015\/02\/11\/broken-links\/","title":{"rendered":"Broken links!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week (9 February) \u00a0the Conservatives gave away the list of constituencies the party is not targeting\u00a0 in the General Election.\u00a0 They did this by including the words \u201cnon target\u201d in the URL of each candidate\u2019s page on the central website.<\/p>\n<p>A bit of an Ooops moment!<\/p>\n<p>So we now know, from the Conservatives\u2019 own material,\u00a0 just how many seats they have already given up on.<\/p>\n<p>Now every party has seats on which it concentrates and those that it knows it can\u2019t win.\u00a0 If you live in a tightly fought target seat you will soon realise because of the volume of leaflets.<\/p>\n<p>But the Conservatives\u2019 error in making their thoughts clear reveals two key points.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, there are political activists out there who will check things like URL titles.\u00a0 Those of us who take great care over what we write and then hand over the production of the links to others have just had a warning!<\/p>\n<p>Secondly , the<a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.markpack.org.uk\/129046\/conservative-non-target-seats\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Conservative list<\/a> is strange.\u00a0\u00a0 Now I am not surprised that Sedgefield (Tony Blair\u2019s former seat) is on the list.\u00a0 But so is Norfolk North, Sefton Central and Rochester and Strood.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t that long ago that Norfolk North was a closely fought contest between the Lib Dems (current incumbent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/person\/2993\/norman-lamb\" target=\"_blank\">Norman Lamb MP<\/a>) and the Tories.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t that long ago that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/shared\/election2010\/results\/constituency\/d90.stm\" target=\"_blank\">Sefton Central<\/a> (current incumbent Labour\u2019s\u00a0 Bill Esterson) was projected as a win for the Conservatives\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debijones.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Debi \u00a0Jones<\/a>.\u00a0 And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/politics\/byelection\/11241798\/Rochester-and-Strood-by-election-live.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rochester and Strood<\/a> was the second UKIP by election win last year which surely the Tories should be aiming to take back.<\/p>\n<p>I am sure there will be candidates up and down the country now telling central office to edit its website.\u00a0 But for candidates who are not Conservatives this slip up is good ammunition.\u00a0 After all, if a representative\u2019s own party has made it clear he or she can\u2019t win, why should anyone listen to requests for votes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week (9 February) \u00a0the Conservatives gave away the list of constituencies the party is not targeting\u00a0 in the General Election.\u00a0 They did this by including the words \u201cnon target\u201d in the URL of each candidate\u2019s page on the central website.
