The Vice Chancellor, John Cater invited everyone to the First Annual Reverend Jesse Jackson lecture.  He reminded us of the very strong tradition that Edge Hill has had in challenging inequalities over the past 125 years and continues to have.  He welcomed the International Journalist Gary Younge who is giving tonight’s lecture.

A Message from Reverend Jesse Jackson

Reverend Jackson sent a message of thanks to Edge Hill University and the Centre for Local Policy Studies for instigating the Annual Jesse Jackson Lecture and Jesse Jackson Scholarships which was delivered by the Director of the Centre for Local Policy Studies, Stuart Speeden.

He reminded us that whilst the election of President Barack Obama was the dawn of a new era of hope for the USA and for the rest of the world, we were still dealing with the ramifications of the failure of the banking system and the problems this has caused for the whole world. These structural inequalities that lie at the heart of our systems are a call for a new stimulus targeting zones of poverty and targeting them now.

Afghanistan and the crisis in American cities are a focus for President Obama’s Agenda and Progressives need to make their voices heard in his support  to take the USA in the right direction.  There is a real need to give his policies time to mature and for everyone to keep hope alive.
